As usual, I ask my better half to choose our dining destinations for the evening. I eat out so much it is refreshing to have someone else who does not eat out very much pick the place for us to dine.
As is also the norm, the search for a nice place to have dinner starts with seeing who offers a Groupon. Loca Luna seems to offer a Groupon, but, unfortunately, like many restaurants who do not adequately management of their digital footprint, the Groupon coupon offer was redirected to a site we have found to be a less desirable vendor and not Groupon. So we chose to take a chance going to Loca Luna without a discount.
My venture into La-La-Land to get a preliminary glimpse of what Loca Luna had to offer was somewhat disappointing. Their website was like most restaurants who have not gained any digital marketing consulting. There was a 1995 feeling to the site with an auto-play music player that took a bit to find to turn off. There was limited information on the restaurant like.. who was running it and what’s it’s claim to fame.
They did have a Facebook and Twitter appearance that someone was keeping up to date, but they had a near complete absence of the more powerful social space, Google.
Their online menu was ‘OK’, but again fit the age of old school digital marketing. None of what I saw online matched to what I experienced in Real Life…which was Awesome.
I was surprised where Google Maps showed Loca Luna located in Dallas. Loca Luna is in the Village on the Green Shopping Center which is at the Northeast section of the Alph Rd and Noel Rd intersection. This has been the ‘kiss of death’ location for many businesses over the years probably due to the huge traffic jams generated by the Galleria Shopping Mall across the street. Adding to the disadvantages of this location there not enough store front parking in this shopping center. Fortunately, Loca Luna has Valet Parking…so, we decided to give it a shot.
As we walked across the parking lot to the entrance of the restaurant I was surprised with the quality of the landscaping. This is where the OMG Meter started registering the awesomeness. Walking through the massive doors the first thing hitting your senses is the size of the establishment. From the outside it appears to be a very quaint sized eatery.
The next thing that hits you is the amount of Leather furniture. Who ever did the interior design had ‘Comfort’ in mine and totally achieve their goal. Very well done and inviting.
The dining room was Huge, with a meeting room off to the side. The wrap around patio made for a nice view out the windows that surround the dining room. The seating was ample with a wide variety of seating arrangements all of which featured Leather.
The atmosphere for the dining room was very well set for an above average dining experience. Having arrived at our normal dining hour the music in the dinning room was turned up to ‘Happy Hour’ levels, but the volume was brought down as more diners arrived.
There was no “Churn-n-Burn” hurry-up feeling given off by the staff. Each table was set for Fine Dining. There was not a paper napkin to be seen. I could tell this was going to be a very comfortable affair.
The service we received fit the atmosphere. Very polite and discreet as you would expect. This is where what you saw on the internet was not captured.
The menu had an ample number of choices. A large number of traditional Mexican dishes mixed in with an average amount of Tex-Mex. There were a number of speciality dishes that caught my eye. The waiter explained the special tonight which was a grilled shrimp dish. He also suggest the Fresh Table-side Prepared Guacamole..of which I could not turn down.
As has been my quest since 2000, I am out to find the Best Top Shelf Margaritas. Loca Luna has a few to choose from. We chose the middle of the road level Top Shelf. The Margarita arrived in a thick walled tall glass. The Mix was not ‘Store Bought”. Fresh lime and a hint of fresh lemon with a blow average amount of tequila. Very tasty, but without the kick I hope for from a true top shelf margarita…OH well..I’ll ask them to turn it up next time.
As is to be expected by any Mexican restaurant, the chip and hot sauce came nearly as soon as we were seated. Luca Luna features a very tasty salsa, meaning it can be enjoyed without pain. They also offered a Black Bean Dip which I could have made a meal out of if they brought me a larger bowl. The Chips where on the ordinary, but were not greasy..a huge plus.
Getting After It
It was time to make the call on what we were going to eat this evening.
My better half chose the Grilled Shrimp Special.
When the food arrived I could tell that a To-Go-Box was going to be needed. One of the things I love about Mexican food restaurants that know what their doing is the huge portions they bring to the table. I’m aware many of my fellow foodies see large portions as a waste, but I see it as a Two-For-One deal. I eat what I want, take the rest home for another meal or snack.
The Grill Shrimp Special was perfect. A little spicy for normal tastes, but tolerable. The plate was filled with fresh grilled vegetables very well prepared.
However, it was the Jalisco Fajita that took the show. Presented in a very hot rock stone bowl the finely sliced chicken breast, top cut skirt steak and four very fresh grilled shrimp was mixed with fresh bell peppers, onions and….drum roll please…BACON. The OMG Meter went to the nuclear level of Ridiculously Awesome. The set up came with a plate filled with guacamole, sour cream, pica de gallo alone with some very well make Spanish rice.
Luca Luna is one of those eateries that surprises those visiting for the first time. I do NOT rate very many restaurants with my 5 Star rating because being a trained amateur chef my expectations of what I eat goes beyond the taste. Dining out should not be a hassel ..it should not be expensive and it should not be an ordeal. Luca Luna caught all of these plus added a great comfortable fine dining experience. My 5 star rating always comes with a frequent return which usually involves me bring my posse of very special foodies. Being a Mexican Food fanatic, I’m sure that return visit will be very soon. I also did not to take a walk through to visit the bar area and the meeting rooms..that will be on my agenda for my next visit to Loca Luna.
PS: Loca Luna is having a Valentine Special..dinner for two with a lot of perks for less than $30….you gotta get you some of that.
Also, as is clearly stated in the disclaimer that is required by the FCC for all bloggers,..some of the blogs on this site are paid for blogs..however…THIS is not one of them. Enjoy, and…
